Where We Are- Map

The Academy of St. Therese is a non-diocesan, non-profit private academy teaching the Catholic Faith from Kindergarten to grade 8, administered and staffed by Catholic laymen, incorporated under the laws of Connecticut.  Independent of the Diocese of Norwich, the school is not an agency of and is in no way connected or affiliated with the Diocese of Norwich.  It is open to all students of any race, color, nationality or ethnic origin willing to learn the Catholic Faith.

Why the Academy of St. Therese?

Picture a garden filled with the most beautiful, colorful flowers imaginable.  The wind and birds come and carry the seeds hither and yon, and not only the garden is dense with  beauty, but also flowers bloom and grow and spread.

Before this garden began, it was just soil in the backyard.  It required seeds.  If just a few seeds had been planted with little or no daily attention, this garden would have been sparse and thin leaving much room for weeds and wild growth - not the garden described above.  However, many, many seeds were not only planted but also nurtured and cared for by many people who love to see the beautiful results of a beautiful garden and know how to accomplish this.

Metaphorically Speaking

Metaphorically, this is exactly what is happening every day at the Academy of St. Therese.  Seeds, many, many seeds, are continually planted daily in the hearts and minds of students.  The germ of these seeds is to know God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – as the Truth; to understand the purpose of the decisions they make embedded in this Truth.

The shell of these seeds, which protects them until they germinate, is the productive love that insists “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” In this process of germination, students realize that heaven is where they ultimately want to be for all eternity, this is exactly what they want for everyone they meet, and they would not do anything to contradict this.  The results, of course, would be the same as the garden described above – growth, transforming barren soil, beautifying the world in Truth and Love.

Arts and Sciences

Our faculty and parents, our chaplain, our speakers, all become the gardeners planting many, many seeds daily through the different aspects of the curriculum, learning about God’s world in truth through religion, literature, English, mathematics, history, geography, Latin, violin, music, art and physical education. The arts, including public speaking, drama, singing, violin, art, and poetry, help students to understand and appreciate themselves and others.  The sciences, including mathematics, biology, astronomy, physics, help students appreciate the world God has created in love and their place in it.  The study of the Catholic faith is integral to both the arts and sciences and gives students an opportunity to prepare for their own vocations/careers embedding them, through their education, in ethics and morals, logic and common sense.

"I ought to seek the company of those Sisters who according to nature please me least.  I ought to fulfill in their regard the office of the Good Samaritan. A word, a kindly smiles, will often suffice to gladden a wounded and sorrowful heart."
